Professional Hydrogen Testing For Molten Aluminum
Before aluminum alloy casting, excessive hydrogen and gas content may cause porosity, shrinkage and surface defects. The SNCQ1000 helps operators judge whether the molten metal meets process requirements through vacuum solidification, sample appearance observation, section inspection and density-related evaluation methods.
Testing Principle
When a molten aluminum sample solidifies under vacuum, dissolved hydrogen separates from the melt and forms bubbles inside or on the surface of the sample. By checking the surface bulge, cauliflower-like appearance, section porosity or density data, operators can evaluate the gas content of molten aluminum.

Multiple Ways To Evaluate Aluminum Melt Gas Content

Surface Observation
After the vacuum-treated sample cools properly, observe the top surface. If the top surface shows a cauliflower-like shape or obvious bulging, it usually indicates higher gas content. If the surface is smooth or slightly concave, the gas content is relatively low.

Section Porosity Inspection
Cut the sample and observe the cross-section. More pores in the section usually indicate higher hydrogen or gas content, while a dense and clean section indicates better melt quality.

Density Measurement Method
Weigh the aluminum sample in air and in water, then calculate the sample density according to Archimedes' principle.

D: aluminum sample density; M1: sample weight in air; M2: sample weight in water.

Density Equivalent Method
Take one sample solidified under vacuum and one sample solidified in air, measure both densities and calculate the density equivalent value for process judgment.

D1: density of sample solidified in air; D0: density of sample solidified under vacuum.

Standards Should Be Set According To Actual Production
Different aluminum alloys and casting processes have different density and density-equivalent requirements. The factory should define proper control standards according to alloy grade, process route and product quality requirements.
A356 Wheel Hub Reference
For A356 aluminum alloy wheel hub production, the density standard can be set greater than 2.58 g/cm³.
ADC12 Die Casting Reference
For ADC12 die casting process, the density equivalent reference can be set less than 2.50.
A356 Low Pressure Casting
For A356 low pressure casting or gravity casting process, the density equivalent reference can be set less than 1.50.
